Overview

World rankings place American Universities in a leadership role in the educational market. From a group of the best 50 Universities ranked in 2009 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 38 of them are from the United States and 8 from Europe. An important question arises—should those rankings be treated as a direct and complete representation of an University’s capabilities? If we answer this question in the positive, another question arises. If the European system of higher education is at fault, then should it be directed onto the path outlined by the American University to become equally attractive and effective? Is the Bologna Process a good program to upgrade the European University system? If it is not, what should be done to change the European University systems to make them more competitive? These and other questions will be topics of interest raised at the international conference on “Drivers of Change and Choice: What Can We Learn About Competitiveness by Comparing U.S. and EU Education at the University Level?”
